Top of the pies

Pie makers from across the county recently entered their finest creations into the Great Hampshire Sausage and Pie Competition. With British Pie Week (4th-10th March) just around the corner, here's a round up of the best of the best.

This talented husband and wife team triumphed at this year's awards taking the title of Supreme Champions for their Egg, Bacon and Chorizo Pie.

They were also crowned winners of the Hot Pies category with their Chicken, Ham and Leek.

Both pies are made with gluten free pastry which is famed for being just as good as standard pastry. In fact it is so good one of the judges remarked "this is possibly the best pastry I have ever eaten."

 

 

Crow farm shop

This family-run farm shop in Ringwood clinched the sought after title of Traditional Pork Pie Champion at this year's awards.

They are certainly not strangers to pie fame having previously won recognition for their scrummy pies at the competition. 

The pie was a team effort with the butchers making it and the owner Sally Ward baking it to perfection.

Swing by the farm shop and pick up a pie to enjoy at home or take a seat in the cafe and tuck in on site.

 

 

uptons of bassett

This popular butchers shop come bistro was singled out in a new category in the competition - Innovative Product. It was their Top and Tail Pie which impressed the judges' taste buds. 

Made from Ox Cheek and Ox Tail the judges commented that it was cooked to perfection and showed great skill.

Uptons also won best Young Sausage Maker, fourteen Gold Awards, three Silver Awards and one Bronze Award. 

 

 

Roy hunt produce

Located on Tatchbury Manor Farm in the New Forest, Roy Hunt Produce is famed for its pies, black pudding and charcuterie.

Queues often form at farmers' markets with hungry customers eager to bag a pie before they sell out.

Therefore, it's no surprise that the judges awarded them with two Golds in the Hot Pie category. One for their Steak and Ale pie and one for their Steak and Kidney.

 


 

A regular at Hampshire Farmers' Markets, Mud Foods were awarded four Golds for their pies. 

It was their Lamb, Redcurrant and Rosemary; Steak and Ale; Steak and Kidney and Steak and Silton which earnt the Gold Awards.

Located in New Milton, the popular Danestream Farm Shop wowed with its pies picking up three Gold Awards and a Silver Award as well as awards in other categories.

The flavours which left the judges most impressed were Chicken, Bacon and Leek; Hampshire Mixed Game and Red Wine; Steak and Kidney. 

Pop by and pick up one of their award-winning pies and be tempted by their impressive array of local goodies. 


 

newlyns farm Shop

Family-run Newlyns Farm Shop located near Hook, impressed across many categories achieving thirteen Awards.

It was their Steak and Onion Pie, Lamb and Mint Pie and Traditional Pork Pie which gained them a Gold Awards. 

Pop by the farm shop and choose from their award-winning products, enjoy some delicious food in the cafe, delve into their new cheese room or visit the other shops on site.

 

 

This friendly family-run business is committed to giving its customers the best service, quality and price possible.

They certainly entered their best into the competition achieving a brilliant ten Gold Awards, three Silvers and a Bronze.

Gold Awards were presented for their Traditional Pork Pie; Chicken and Ham (hot and cold); Steak and Ale and Steak and Kidney.

A regular at Hampshire Farmers' Market, A Basing Bakes specialises in gluten-free pies and cakes.

The judges awarded their Chicken, Leek and Tarragon Pie and Lamb Samosa Pie Silver.

grover butchers

As well as picking up three Gold Awards for their sausages, Grover Butchers won Silver for their Hot Minted Lamb Pie.

This popular butchers located in Bishope's Waltham and Locks Hearth is no stranger to meaty success having won multiple times in previous years of the competittion.
