Help for hampshire's pig farmers

In 2011, local food group, Hampshire Fare recognised the challenges being faced by local pig farmers. Increasing feed prices and no funding meant making money from pig farming was proving impossible for many Hampshire farmers.

Determind to save the situation and the Hampshire hog, Hampshire Fare set about training local farmers in the art of charcuterie making. By diversifying into new products with a longer shelf life the producers would have an opportunity to increase their profits.

The Prince's Countryside Fund saw the potential of the project and pledged its support through a grant which made the idea a reality. This was the beginning of the 'Preserving the Hampshire Hog' project.

The participants benefited from two year's of tuition from charcuterie expert, Marc-Frederic Berry. The group has embraced the opportunity and charcuterie is now a key part of the farmers' businesses.
